My name is Jonathan Minogue. I converted from atheism to Christianity on October 30th, 2011. My conversion was not through some supernatural revelation, nor some spiritual epiphany. I converted for one reason, which was through the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
I was sitting on the stairwell out side of my apartment reading a book called “Revelation Revealed” which was about the Book of Revelation in the Bible, when I noticed a young man approaching me. He was very polite and said to me, “I noticed you through my window and was wondering what you were reading.” “It’s called ‘Revelation Revealed,'” I answered. With excitement in his tone, he responded with, “Oh, that’s great! My name is John and I am a Christian, what religion are you?” “I’m an atheist,” I said.
His demeanor changed abruptly and a look of confusion was all that remained. “If you are an atheist,” he asked, “why are you reading a book about the Bible?” “Well,” I began, “I am always looking for answers to see if I can find the truth.”
He explained to me that he was studying Christian Apologetics (the evidence that defends Christianity and God’s existence), which, at that time I had never heard the word Apologetics, so I didn’t know exactly what that meant. He engaged me with many questions about what I believe and why, which I answered very sincerely and openly. Four to five hours flew by as if in an instant. He then told me that he was meeting up with another Christian Apologist named Marty that very evening and if I wanted to come along, he would ask if it would be okay. I said I’d enjoy that, and that is what we did.
Marty came to the apartment complex and we all took seats inside the gated pool area and began what would be a very interesting conversation. He asked me what it was that made me believe there was no God and I offered up many reasons and objections to God’s existence, as well as, what I believed (at the time) were unexplainable problems with the Holy Bible, some seemingly contradictory writings in the New Testament, and some serious problems with the plausibility of an all loving God creating an everlasting Hell for his most cherished creation.
Marty answered my questions with a gentle fervor I didn’t really expect, and what really caught me off guard, is that his answers actually made logical sense. A few hours by the pool and many questions and answers later, I was by no means ready to claim Christianity, however, I did realize my belief in atheism had reached a “STOP” sign, at least until further notice. As the dialogue came to an end, Marty suggested a book by Lee Strobel called The Case for Christ. John, as luck would have it (or maybe not) had that very book and was kind enough to let me borrow it.
Now, let me break away for just a moment to say that in the passed seven or eight hours of continuous Q&A, although I was intrigued at the answers I had heard, I was still unsure if there really was tangible evidence that existed in the world that could truly affirm anything written in the Bible as fact. I always thought religion was what you were told as a child and that we were not supposed to really question anything, but to believe it, nonetheless. What I found in Strobel’s book, for lack of better words, blew me away.
I finished The Case for Christ in two nights and by the time I closed the book, I knew I was wrong about my atheism. The evidence that vindicates all of the objections to Jesus Christ’s existence, life, being the prophesied Messiah, and most importantly, his resurrection, were abundant and compelling! I could no longer believe what I previously had. I prayed for salvation from our Lord that moment, which was the first step toward what I would do with the rest of my life.
I have been a Christian less two years, and I have studied Christian Apologetics ever since my conversion, and it is all for the glory of God. It is all for this exact moment, to share my experience with others, so that they may seek to find the truth.
Thank you for reading my testimony, and may you find the answers that you have, through Jesus Christ, our Lord!
